About PGI

Professional Geologists of Indiana PGI is a not-for-profit organization of professional geologists. Since our inception in 1993, PGI’s goal has remained unchanged: to promote and advance the profession of geology in Indiana.

PGI strives to improve recognition of our professional qualifications to perform jobs within our sphere of expertise; but we do not seek to interfere with the rights of other professions to perform jobs for which they are qualified.

PGI’s purposes are stated in our Constitution and Bylaws.

• Adopt and promote a high standard of professional conduct and ethics.
  
• Support and promote the Indiana Licensed Professional Geologist (LPG) program.

• Enhance and increase the professional recognition of LPGs, including geologic review and certification of appropriate documents by Indiana Licensed Professional Geologists.

• Encourage geoscience education and research.
  
• Advocate the need for continuing education in the geosciences.
  
• Participate in legislative and administrative activities, especially as they relate to the science of geology.

In practice, we have pursued these objectives through various activities:

• Monitoring legislative activities that are potentially related to the profession of geology.

• Involvement in educational activities such as seminars, field trips, scholarships, science fairs, and generating public awareness. PGI annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving college or university student.

• Annual awards recognizing valuable contributions to the science and profession of geology made by geologists and their supporters. These awards are given at the annual Spring Barbeque and Gathering of Indiana Geologists.
  
• Joint participation in activities with other geological organizations.
• Sponsorship of the annual PGI-All-Universities roaming field trip.
• The PGI Geology Standard, our scrupulous and uncompromising newsletter, is published at least twice each year.
